 The Advice Specialist- Dedan Tolbert

Question:

What’s good Dedan, I have a question about a situation that I am currently in. I have been seeing this girl for a month now and we are really feeling each other. We always have good conversations on the phone and we have gone to the movies, out to eat, walked in the park etc.

Everything was cool until the other night when things got a little out of control. We were watching a movie and one thing lead to another. The next thing I knew both of our clothes were off. We have come close to having sex before but nothing like this.

Since it seemed like it was about to go down, I went for the condom that was in my wallet. Even though she was looking right at me, she asked me what I was doing. At first I smiled, and then just ignored her. We went back to kissing and I put on the condom. I tried to put it in but she stopped me and told me not to put it in. I was a little frustrated but I respected her wishes and backed off. I start to get up but she pulled me back down on top of her. To make a long story short, after a few more minutes of kissing and touching, I tried to put it in again and this time she let me.

We were doing it and all of a sudden, she starts trippin and tells me to get off her. She starts crying saying that I raped her and that she told me to stop. She threatened to call the police and tells me to leave.

I got my stuff and left. My question to you is based on my version of the story was I wrong for my actions, in your opinion, did I rape her or was she just playing games?

My Advice:

You really need to be careful in situations where sex is involved. Your friend could have easily pressed charges against you and there would have been nothing you could have done about it. The thing about rape is that it’s her word against yours and the jury usually tends to believe the woman.

In your defense, many women play games where they say no when they really mean "yes". For some reason, women think that it’s cute or sexy to tease men with sex, so when the time comes when they really mean no, many men do not take them seriously.

My advice to you would be to always play it safe when a woman says no.

Just stop whatever it is that you are doing and remove yourself from the situation. Rape is a serious charge and no woman is worth losing your freedom.

Anyone who reads my column on a regular basis knows that I keep it real and call it like I see it, whether the man or the woman is right. In your situation, I do not see you as being wrong. Your girl sat there and watched you go into your wallet to get the condom and then put it on.

If she was not cool with what was about to go down, that would have been the time to tell you to stop. Instead, she waited until you were actually inside of her to say no.

A good rule of thumb for all relationships is to have good communication with each other. When dating someone, you need to be fully aware of their views regarding sex. Some women make it known that they want to wait until marriage to be intimate. Other women say they have to be in a committed relationship. And then there are the women who let you know that it’s going down right after you get home from TGI Fridays on the first date.

Normally, if a woman is willing to sleep with you, she makes it known in one form or another. But in the event that she does not make her intentions clear, you need to realize that no always means no. Never assume that her no means yes or maybe. A split second could change your life forever. Just ask Mike Tyson.

Hopefully, I shed some light on this subject for you.

Look Out For... What Ya Know About taragirl???

Besides her go-getter attitude, her never give up spunk, and her all around contagious personality, taragirl can sing which makes her a star on the rise. At the age of 3, a young Jersey girl can be seen in home videos barely able to hold a microphone but more than able to belt out tunes that would surprise any listener.

While others may be on their way to New York, the city of dreams to pursue their career, taragirl did the opposite and left New York with Philly as her destination. “I wanted to gain an audience that would appreciate the music that I had to bring,” taragirl says.  “Philly has been known to bring forth great artists like Patti LaBelle and producers like Gamble and Huff. Philly is also known for its new sound of soul like those greats who performed with the Black Lily’s such as Jill Scott, the JazzFatNastees and The Roots,” she continues, “I wanted to be a part of that.”

Thus far, taragirl’s move has proved to be great for her career. She has shared music from her debut CD “The 26th Power” with many great artists who includes The Brand New Heavies, Avant and Hil St. Soul. Giving several fierce main stage performances, taragirl has become one of the most talked about “unsigned artists” on the east coast.

“I enjoy the attention that I have been getting from those that like my music but I am not letting it get to my head,” says the sassy performer. “I know that when you get to big headed you lose your focus and tend not to reach higher... I want to go straight to the top.”

The 26th Power is a very personal for taragirl and easy to listen for soul-sound lovers. “I wanted the songs to have meaning for everyone and I wanted people who like a different genre of music to be able to hear my music and enjoy it,” says taragirl.

One of the favorites on her CD is “Voicemail” where taragirl sings to a man that she is sorry that the relationship ended on a bad note and that they should try to remain friends. When asking taragirl how closely the song was to her own relationship, “Oh goodness, please don’t get me started,” she laughs.

If you are looking to be entertained by this young lady full of energy and fire, and want to hear music that soothes the heart and stirs the soul, then visit www.taragirl.com and visit her calendar for a list of dates. We are sure that you won’t be disappointed.

 A Contribution 2 Herstory

Jill Scott

Infinite Mag was a part of history when we were invited to celebrate the first annual Black Lily Music and Film Festival from May 4-6, 2007. The three day event was filled with education through workshops and discussion panels, independent films produced and directed by women, and music that filled the evenings with excitement.

Although the Black Lily M & F was the first of its kind, its roots were planted more than ten years ago when Tracey Moore and Mercedes Martinez moved to Philadelphia from Los Angeles after being convinced by their friend ?estLove of the Legendary Roots Crew to further pursue their career.

While living in Philly, they would connect with ?estLove and moments of writing, experimenting and connecting with other musicians in Philly, jam sessions became frequent in the house of ?estLove. When the crowd of ten grew to a crowd of one hundred the musicians became more male dominated and the ladies wanted to create a venue that would feature more women new to the music scene.

                                    Alice Smith                                    Amy Winehouse

In 1999, The Jazzfatnastees began their venue, The Black Lily named after one of the rarest forms of lilies, at the famous Wetlands in New York City. Many female performers including Erykah Badu, Jaguar Wright and Macy Gray came through The Black Lily to hone their performance skills and give such a hot and intimate jam session that many other performers were dying to get to the Black Lily and open the doors to their careers.

In 2000, Martinez and Moore brought the Black Lily to Philly and settled in at The Five Spot every Tuesday for five years vastly becoming one of the most popular venues in the city. News of the ever growing event began to spread and great performers including Alicia Keys, P. Diddy and India.Arie came through to mellow in the vibes of the Philly sounds.

Jazzfatnastees

The success of the Black Lily created a lot of hoopla and many artists like MusiqSoulChild, Bilal and Kindred the Family Soul received contracts and were no longer available to jam, so in 2005 the doors of the Black Lily closed. The devastation was definitely felt around the city but it was also felt internationally as many people reached out to see what they could do to keep the event going...

Well, in 2006, Maori K. Holmes best known for her awesome documentary entitled Scene Not Heard which was brilliantly focused on the women of Philadelphia and their contribution to the hiphop and soul music movement approached Tracey and Mercedes of the Black Lily about a film festival that focused on the creativity of women. It didn’t take much to convince the women that this would be a huge success, and thus we celebrated the event with a bang.

The Black Lily M & F was a complete agenda of activities and events that filled the entire day. Starting the day with breakfast and closing the late evening with a live concert made the entire day worth it all and you definitely don’t want to miss it next year on May 2-4, 2008.
